Your skin will thank you.
1. Not putting enough sunscreen. Or worse, skipping it altogether. We all love that sun-kissed look but your future self will thank you for slapping on the sunscreen now. The sun is THE biggest culprit for skin damage like premature ageing and skin cancers. Many people only apply sunscreen products when they know they are going to engage in activities under the sun but really, we cannot stress the importance of daily sun protection enough. The sun can damage your skin, even when it’s cold or cloudy outside. Look for a broad-spectrum sun product with SPF 30 and above, AND at least PA+. SPF or sun protection factor, helps block UVB rays from the sun while PA, or protection grade of UVA, well, blocks UVA rays. Apply sun product every 2 hours, and use enough - a full teaspoon is recommended to cover the face.
2. Leaving makeup on before sleeping. This is another huge no-no among skincare experts. Not removing your makeup means clogged pores which could lead to acne. In worse cases, this could even lead to bacterial infections. To avoid skipping this step from laziness/forgetfulness, keep a pack of makeup wipes by your bedstand.
3. Not washing your makeup brushes and sponges. Ah, a surprise here that made it to the list. Keeping your makeup brushes clean is super important too to avoid bacteria build-up and subsequent breakouts. Experts recommend washing concealer and foundation brushes at least once a week, while brushes around the eyes at least twice a month, and all others once a month. Readhere for how to clean them.
4. Too much alcohol/coffee and not enough water. Alcohol and coffee dehydrate the skin and magnify wrinkles while water of course, helps clear out the skin. No secret formula, really, just lots of water.Overlooking sleep and sleeping conditions. Our skin regenerates when we sleep, so practically, the longer you sleep, the more your skin is able to heal. The recommended time is at least 7 hours to prevent dull skin and fine lines so your skin cells have time to turn over. Also, your sleeping conditions matter! Still using that pillowcase from last month? It’s time to have it washed. As the surface that comes into contact with our face, our pillowcases collect oils, dead skin cells, bacteria etc. We recommend changing them once a week.
